Engine (Power)
Each of the 2021 Toyota Highlander models features a 3.5-liter V-6 engine that outputs 295 horsepower and 263 pound-feet of torque. This engine features an eight-speed automatic transmission and comes standard with front-wheel drive. The hybrid Highlanders are equipped with 2.5-liter four-cylinder engines and electric motors that create a total of 243 system horsepower. This setup features a continuously variable transmission.
Performance
Though front-wheel drive is standard for the 2021 Highlander, you can upgrade it with a dynamic torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive system for better traction on less reliable roads. The Highlander gets up to an estimated 21 mpg in the city and 29 on the highway. If you want an even more impressive mileage, upgrade to the Highlander Hybrid, which raises those numbers to 36 mpg in the city and 35 on the highway. For a more spirited driving style, choose the XSE to enjoy a sport-tuned suspension. The Highlander enables you to tow up to 5,000 pounds.
Interior
The Toyota Highlander is a three-row SUV that gives you enough space to pack who and what you need to make your trips count. Both of the rear rows fold down to offer up to 84.3 cubic feet of total cargo volume. With all seats in their upright position, the Highlander gives up 16 cubic feet of cargo space. Standard features include tri-zone automatic climate control and a power-adjustable driver's seat. Choose the XLE for heated front seats and a wireless charging pad. The Limited adds creature comforts such as leather upholstery and ventilated front seats.
Safety Features
Each 2021 Toyota Highlander features driver-assist features from the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ suite. This includes the pre-collision system with low-light pedestrian detection, full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert with steering assist, and automatic high beams. If you want to add the blind-spot monitor to your Highlander, upgrade to the LE trim level. The Limited level throws in parking sensors for the front and rear to make sliding into tight spaces easier.
