The 2022 Toyota Corolla is a compact sedan. The longevity of this model indicates its universal appeal and reliability, but Toyota continues to improve upon the offering. The latest model comes in five trim levels: L, LE, XLE, SE, and XSE. Toyota also offers two specialty trim levels: SE Nightshade Edition and Apex Edition. Standard exterior equipment includes LED headlights and daytime running lights, a sporty mesh grille, and 15-inch steel wheels. The LE trim adds larger 16-inch wheels and is available with alloy wheels, a sunroof, and upgraded side mirrors as options.
Choose the XLE to get all the options offered on the LE, along with upgraded lighting and proximity keyless entry. The SE tacks on larger 18-inch alloy wheels and sporty trim, while the SE Nightshade Edition also has blacked-out trim and its own set of wheels. At the top of the list, the XSE boasts gray side rocker panels with a complementary rear spoiler. The special Apex Edition mirrors the XSE and adds blackout accents and bronze trim.
Engine (Power)
With the lower trim levels, a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine comes standard. It produces 139 horsepower and 126 pound-feet of torque, pairing with a continuously variable transmission. On the higher trims, you get a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 169 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. This engine works with a dynamic-shift continuously variable transmission, although the SE is offered with an optional six-speed manual transmission. All versions of the 2022 Corolla come standard with front-wheel drive.
Performance
If you want to save at the fuel pump, the Corolla is an excellent non-hybrid option. Drivers who want a sportier driving experience may want to consider the Apex Edition, a specialty trim level that adds upgraded suspension components and a lower ride height as standard, while summer performance tires are optional.
Interior
Within the cabin of the base trim level, you'll find cloth upholstery, manual climate control, and adjustable front seats. The tech features include a 7-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, a driver information display, and dual USB ports. Additional comfort features offered on the higher trims include upgraded upholstery, heated and power-adjustable front seats, and dual-zone automatic climate control. On the tech side, you can get a premium JBL audio system, a larger 8-inch touch screen, a rear USB port, and an upgraded driver information display.
Safety Features
All 2022 Toyota Corolla models come with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, a powerful suite of active safety features. This suite bundles a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, lane departure alert with steering assist, road sign assist, dynamic radar cruise control, and lane-tracing assist. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is optional on the LE and standard on the upper four trims.
