How Much Weight a Tundra Can Really Pull

Two trucks can wear the same badge and stop at very different numbers. Cab size, bed length, drivetrain, and engine all move the tow rating. Sometimes by thousands of pounds. Shopping for a full-size Toyota with a trailer in mind? The trim you pick counts as much as the engine.

  • Toyota rates a properly equipped 2026 Tundra at up to 12,000 pounds of towing.
  • The gas i-FORCE V6 and the i-FORCE MAX hybrid pull in different ways.
  • Every 2026 grade leaves the plant with a tow hitch and a 7/4-pin connector.

Two Engines With Two Different Feels

Both Tundra engines start the same way. A 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 and a 10-speed automatic. That’s where they split. Toyota rates the gas i-FORCE at 389 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque in most grades. The base SR runs a lower-output tune on the same engine, producing 348 hp and 405 lb-ft of torque. Add hybrid parts, and you get the i-FORCE MAX. It makes 437 net combined horsepower and 583 lb-ft, and peak torque lands low at 2,400 rpm.

More torque doesn’t mean more trailer. The motor, battery, and wiring add real weight. That weight eats into what’s left for the hitch. So the hybrid feels stronger off a boat ramp, while the gas V6 holds the bigger number on paper. Both engines get a sequential shift mode, uphill and downhill shift logic, and a TOW/HAUL setting. TOW/HAUL holds gears longer and sharpens the throttle.

Why Two Identical Trims Can Tow Different Amounts

Tow ratings work backward from curb weight. Every option you add takes a bite out of the number. A CrewMax cab weighs more than a Double Cab. Four-wheel drive adds a transfer case and a front axle. Roofs, big wheels, power running boards, and leather seats all count too.

That’s why the highest Toyota Tundra towing capacity shows up on a lighter, simpler truck. Not the loaded one in the front row. Toyota lists 12,000 pounds as the max for a properly equipped 2026 Tundra. The rating for the exact truck you’re standing next to is on the doorjamb sticker and in the owner’s manual. Check it before you hook up.

Toyota lists 12,000 lbs. maximum towing and 1,850 lbs. maximum payload for the Tundra lineup, and both figures come from specific builds rather than every grade. Ratings vary with cab, bed length, and drivetrain, so confirm the number for your truck on the doorjamb sticker before you tow.

Tow Hardware You Get Without Checking a Box

For 2026, Toyota made the tow hitch and 7/4-pin connector standard on every grade. That includes the entry SR. Trailer-Sway Control comes with the Star Safety System. A 32.2-gallon fuel tank is standard across the board, so your range with a trailer stays decent.

Move up to SR5, and the Integrated Trailer Brake Controller comes along. It syncs truck and trailer braking through the driver display. Blind Spot Monitor with Trailer Merge Warning helps on the interstate. The Panoramic View Monitor turns solo hitching into a short job. A max payload of 1,850 pounds leaves room for gear and tongue weight together.

What Changes When the 2027 Arrives

Toyota showed an updated 2027 Tundra in July. It gets a squarer front end, a new Trailhunter package based on the SR5, Toyota Safety Sense 4.0, a 14-inch screen, and a 2.4kW inverter on hybrid grades. Full specs and pricing are set for fall 2026. Tow ratings for that truck aren’t official yet. If you want a number to plan around today, the 2026 is the one with published figures.

Picking the Grade That Fits Your Load

Trailer near the top of the range? A lighter SR5 with rear-wheel drive gives you the most headroom. Tow a few times a season and drive the rest of the year? The i-FORCE MAX and its low-rpm torque make heavy launches easier and return better mileage in town. Weigh what you really pull, add a cushion, then shop the grade that clears it with room to spare. That beats chasing the biggest number in a brochure.

Match a Tundra to Your Trailer at Toyota South

We keep a mix of Tundra cab, bed, and drivetrain setups on the lot in Richmond. That beats any chart when you’re trying to land on the right one. Bring the weight of your trailer, boat, or gear. We’ll walk the rows with you, pull the door jamb ratings off the trucks you like, and show you where the hitch and connector are located. Our factory-trained techs can also cover brake controller setup and towing service intervals. Four generations of our family have sold trucks to Kentucky drivers who work them hard, so ask the awkward questions.
