Celebrating Toyota History at Toyota South
At Toyota South, we are very proud of Toyota history. While some people may know that Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., was formed in the United States about 59 years ago, few people may know that the company already had years of building innovative vehicles prior to establishing itself on these shores. Today, the Toyota brand has well established itself as a maker of reliable vehicles and it is one of the reasons why we are so proud to be the go-to Toyota car dealership serving the Winchester, KY, and Berea, KY area.
Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. was established in 1937 in Japan. While they are most famous for their innovative automobiles, the company actually started in the loom business building non-stop shuttle change type automatic looms. It was in 1929 when the founder’s son traveled to Europe to investigate automobiles and gasoline-powered engines that the idea for building automobiles was born. Over the next few decades, the company focused on building innovative and efficient automobiles. As their popularity grew, the automaker established its U.S.A. operations in 1957. Finding success with the legendary Toyota Land Cruiser model and the Toyota Corona, more Americans began to discover the quality and reliability of Toyota products. By 1967, the Toyota brand had become the third-best-selling import brand in the United States. Good wasn’t good enough and the automaker continued to invent new models to introduce to the public. The thrifty Toyota Corolla was introduced in 1968 and was a huge success with American drivers. The success of the Toyota Corolla lead the company to become the number one import brand in the United States by the end of 1975.
Throughout the next few decades, the brand continued to pioneer new technology and introduce reliable, efficient, innovative new Toyota vehicles. Some models have been phased out of production, like the Toyota Corona, but others, like the Toyota Corolla, have remained in production for one simple reason—it has proven its worth to drivers. Since its introduction in 1968, the Toyota Corolla has since become the world’s all-time best-selling passenger car, with over 30 million sold in more than 140 countries. The Toyota Camry launched in 1986 and by 1997 had earned the title of the No.1-selling passenger car in America. In 1998, the company launched its first full-sized pickup, the Toyota Tundra, which has since won numerous awards over the years. One of the biggest automobile innovations came at the start of the new millennium with the launch of the Toyota Prius—the world’s first mass-produced gas/electric hybrid car. Through improvements of conventional technology, as well as pioneering efforts of the application of new technologies, the Toyota brand took great steps to develop eco-cars which helped, and continue to help, us become a low carbon society.
The company has continued to establish itself has an innovator in the automobile industry. With over 75 years of automobile building experience, the Toyota brand continues to push the boundaries of car technology and engineering and build quality vehicles that are reliable, novel, and deliver excellent performance. At Toyota South, we are proud to sell the Toyota brand and feel great satisfaction in helping our Lexington, KYarea customers find the perfect Toyota vehicle from our Toyota showroom to fit their needs and lifestyle.
