Here at Toyota South, we know that drivers are looking for a car that delivers cutting-edge technology. One feature that automakers are hard at work on right now is self-driving technology. The Toyota brand is no different. It’s bringing a new test vehicle to the Consumer Electronics Show that gives us an indication of just how far they’ve come.

This test vehicle, known as the Platform 3.0, differs from some other test vehicles in a few ways. The main difference is that its suite of sensors and cameras are integrated into the body. If you’ve ever seen a model that’s being used to test out new self-driving tech, you’ve probably noticed conspicuous LIDAR sensors, cameras, and other equipment that probably wouldn’t be deemed acceptable on a production car. The Platform 3.0, despite its boring name, is actually moving us closer to the reality of new Toyota cars that can drive themselves.

This test vehicle is also equipped with updated tech that gives this car a better view of its surroundings. The Platform 3.0 has been outfitted with an upgraded LIDAR sensor that gives it a 360-degree range of vision, which makes this a big improvement over the previous test vehicle that could only keep track of objects in front of it. Short-range LIDAR sensors are also present on each side of the car, which makes it easier for the autonomous system to detect objects like road debris or pedestrians. We look forward to seeing this self-driving technology for ourselves, and we can’t wait to see how it improves!
