As it turns out, quite a bit. See, Toyota and Beamer recently signed a memorandum of understanding in the development of a new car battery to be used in hybrid models. This, combined with the company's other deal with the Blue Oval, is sure to bring their already impressive hybrid platform to new levels of superiority, and we here at Toyota South are thrilled to see where it goes.
Aside from the development of a new car battery, the two companies also walked away with a little something from each other too. For instance, the Bavarian automaker gave Toyota its diesel technology to use in Europe, while Toyota gave them access to the platform that powers the Toyota Prius. In the end, both sides walked away happy, and are now ready to begin work on an entirely new project.
Before we go any further, however, we already know what you're thinking. Aren't these two automakers supposed to be competing with each other? In one sense, yes, they are. But when you take a step back and look at the big picture, the two companies are really appealing to different segments of drivers. For instance, Toyota tends to appeal to more down-to-earth consumers who want to get the most out of their vehicle, while BMW is more focused on the premium vehicle segment and performance.
For proof of the fact that these differences actually inspired the deal between the two companies, we would turn your attention to Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG. He says, "Toyota is the leading provider of environment-friendly series technology in the volume segment and the BMW Group is the most innovative and sustainable manufacturer of premium automobiles. We are now joining forces to further develop environment-friendly technologies and to expand our innovation leadership in each of our segments. Supplying Toyota with our fuel efficient and dynamic diesel engines represents another important step in the planned expansion of our sales activities for engines and powertrain system."1
